The History of the Society
Formed in 1963 to share an interest in and perform the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, the society actively continues to pursue its aims by producing one fully staged operetta a year with full orchestra and also presents a wide variety of concerts. In its early days it had the distinction (!) of performing on 'Opportunity Knocks', the first Gilbert & Sullivan Society to do so, and has since presented many Gilbert & Sullivan celebrity concerts with D'Oyly Carte principals in Huddersfield Town Hall and other major venues in the north of England. Each year the society gives a concert for local charity and has given joint presentations with several brass bands, the Thespians and other local choirs. In 1999 we entertained on 'The Penistone Line' and two years ago we were invited to present a Victorian Evening of Ballads Songs and Snatches in Keswick to help raise funds for their new Theatre by the Lake. The Theatre on the Lake has now been opened for a number of years and we have been invited to put on concerts, the first in August 2000 then in August 2002 and August 2004. On all occasions we were fortunate enough to play to full houses.
The society rehearses throughout the year and is always keen to welcome new members whether singers or not, who have an interest in Gilbert& Sullivan.
